Genesis 1-11 Contiental Commentaries

Westermann presents exhaustive bibliographies and wide-ranging summaries of various interpretations. As such, it is an invaluable reference for work on Genesis 1-11, especially German scholarship, until the early 1970s. Unfortunately, the discussions often jump around from topic to topic and back again, and the author seems to contradict himself frequently. His translations are very traditional, even where he offers better renderings in the commentary. His emphasis on traditional history can be distracting. His bibliographies are scattered throughout the text, and are arranged chronologically rather than by author so that tracking back references in the text is difficult. I bought this as an essential reference for a scholarly study of the stories in Gen. 1-11, and that purpose it rates four stars, but it requires more work than it should.
