Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. “ When examining a Biblical verse, it is important to understand the historical context in which it’s written. Originally recorded by John, Son of Zebedee, whose main purpose in writing his Gospel can be found in John 20:31, “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. , is Jesus’ declaration “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. The passage of John 14:6 is part of an extensive conversation that Jesus had with his disciples during the “Last Supper” on the eve of the Passover Feast. Immediately preceding the statement, we read that Judas has been identified as the betrayer of Jesus and that Peter will deny Jesus three times before sunrise. Jesus has just advised his followers that he will be leaving them soon and He is attempting to comfort them.

Jesus does not just show us the way to true life. He is the way to true life Himself. That’s what Jesus is saying here. He adds: “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Jesus is not implying that He is one of the many ways to God. No, He says He is the only way to God the Father and without Him we will not enter into heaven.

The Bible states that we all are like lost sheep, wandering in our own ways. (Isaiah 53:6) and that we are “dead in our sins” (Ephesians 2:1). Jesus, God’s Son, has been sent to this earth to save us from our sins and sinful nature. Jesus says: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). Do you believe in Jesus as your Savior? Don’t trust your own ways or the ways of other teachers, but trust Him, the “living way” (Hebrews 10:19-20), unto eternal life.

Jesus does not just give us beautiful truth and life lessons. In fact, He stands out among other teachers in world religions, philosophies and popular books in one ultimate way: He Himself is the truth: “I am the truth” (John 14:6). Notice the singular: Jesus is clearly saying He is the only truth. We can see this in what He says and does. This should be the supreme motivating force behind our life: Jesus is the only God-given truth in this world full of darkness. Yes, Jesus and nothing or no one else must be the purpose of this world and your life. “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created” (Colossians 1:15-16). You as well were created by Him!

“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12). Jesus says of the people who believe in Him: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10) and “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11: 25-26). Jesus has conquered death because He rose from the dead for us, sinful people. If you believe in Him, you will live with Him forever in the house of the Father (2 Corinthians 5:8). When Jesus returns to this world, you will be risen from the dead by Him (1 Corinthians 15:20-30).

We learned that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (John. 14:6). Do you believe this or are you still following your own ways, making up your own truth and living your own life? “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:14)
