Culpepper’s narratological model of the Fourth Gospel rests on a relatively stable assumption about the teleology of irony: that Johannine irony, while frequently generating dramatic misunderstanding within the story world, ultimately functions as a literary strategy for guiding the implied reader toward correct recognition.  In this view, episodes of misrecognition (for example, misunderstandings of metaphorical discourse or symbolic actions) are not structurally open-ended but pedagogically ordered. Irony therefore operates as a controlled gap between surface misunderstanding and deeper authorially intended meaning. In this framework, misunderstanding is not an endpoint but a transitional stage within a coherent epistemic progression: it delays recognition but does not destabilize its eventual achievement.

Closely connected to this is Culpepper’s model of the implied reader as one who is gradually aligned with the narrative’s interpretive logic. The Gospel’s literary strategies are repetition, symbolic layering, and selective disclosure. These strategies are understood to shape a reader who increasingly converges with the implied author’s evaluative stance. Misunderstanding within the story world (e.g., by Nicodemus or the disciples) is therefore contrasted with the reader’s progressive interpretive competence, producing what Culpepper describes as a structured process of narrative education. 

The Gospel’s unity, in turn, is secured through this alignment: disparate episodes, dialogues, and signs are integrated into a coherent theological and literary design in which irony, symbolism, and characterization mutually reinforce a unified narrative intention.  Even where ambiguity is present, it is ultimately subordinated to a governing narrative logic that ensures convergence rather than fragmentation.
